What To Do When You Hate Your Job And Your Life

I hate my job and my life! Sound like you? Here's some guidance from someone who's been there...

Hate is a strong word.  Some people flinch when they hear it.

I like to use it in some of my articles though, because that’s how many people feel even though few dare say it out loud.  Many people hate their job and their life.

I also want to use it because I want to reach people who literally hate their jobs and not just those who are mildly dissatisfied.  A client of mine recently told me she was thankful for her toxic job because it had forced her to figure out her true purpose in life.  If she hadn’t been as unhappy, she might not have built up the gumption to do something about it.  So writing an article about what to do when you are mildly dissatisfied with your job probably wouldn’t attract as many interested readers. 🙂 

Another question someone might ask is why lump “job” and “life” together.  Obviously, it’s possible to hate your job but love your life outside the job.  I’m lumping them together though, because that’s not the way it usually goes.  A typical job consumes a huge part of your life.  It consumes such a large part that the stress of it often spills over into other areas of your life.

And this “all-consuming” quality of a job also means that “doing something about it” easily becomes overwhelming.  The hated job is taking a vast majority of your time and it’s draining you dry.  So you don’t have a ton of time or energy to work on changing things.  You might well feel completely stuck.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HATE YOUR JOB AND YOUR LIFE

Look, I could give you a 12-step program for revamping your career and 7 steps for totally changing your life (and I’ve done exactly that in other articles), but in this one, I don’t want to overwhelm you further, so I’m going to focus on just two ideas.

1. Work on cultivating the belief that change is possible.

The thing that keeps people stuck in a hated job (and life) the most is believing that change is not in the cards for them.  You’ve been stuck for a while.  You haven’t been able to figure out a way out yet.  So you conclude that this is just the way it is and it’s never gonna change.  

But you know what?  Change is ALWAYS possible.  It may not be easy.  You may not yet know how to make it happen.  But it IS possible.

Don’t believe me?  Well, how could you prove it to yourself?  

Do you know of other people who have changed their lives?  

What changes have you made in the past?

2. Start taking action toward change.

The other thing that keeps people stuck is thinking that you have to have everything figured out before you do anything.  So while you are waiting for everything to be figured out, you do nothing.  And when you do nothing, nothing changes.

But you are never going to have everything figured out in advance.  You figure things out as you go.

So what you must do is start somewhere.

Start taking some kind of action.

Even if you don’t know where exactly you are headed.

Even if you are not 100% sure it’s the right thing.

Even if you are not 100% sure it’s going to work.

Action →  Change.
