How To Get Your Life Together

A simple 5-step framework for getting your life together

Let me start this off by clarifying that when I say “get your life together” I’m not talking about streamlining your morning routine or getting your closets organized.

I’m talking about getting your LIFE together.

Where are you at in life?  Do you feel like you’re doing what you’re meant to be doing?  Are you excited to wake up in the morning?  Do you feel calm and content in knowing that you are on the right path? Do you feel like you are moving forward?

Or are you a little lost?  Feeling like something’s off?  Like there should be more to life than this?

Stressed?  Tired?  Self-doubty?  Struggling?

If it’s more of the latter, then I have something for you.  A path. A process. A framework.

A “how to get your life together” when things are feeling blah and grey and less than what you hoped for.  And incidentally, it’s not that different from overhauling your closets!

A simple 5-step framework for getting your life together

How To Get Your Life Together

1. Figure Out Who You Are And What You Need

Getting your life together starts with getting YOU together.  Wiping the fog off the mirror and taking a second, third, and fourth look at who you actually are as a person and what you actually need from life. 

Because one thing you don’t want to do is put all this effort into getting your life together and then lo and behold it turns out to be the wrong kind of life for who you happen to be as a person.  

That would be like going on a shopping spree and dropping a few hundred bucks on a spanking new wardrobe and then getting home and realizing that you just drained your bank account on bagfuls of items that are actually not your style. At all.

To avoid that unfortunate happenstance you need self discovery work. What’s your inborn personality like? What are your likes and dislikes?  What are your non-negotiable needs in life? 

2. Figure Out What Engages And Energizes You

To achieve full self awareness, you not only need clarity about who you are, but you also need to figure out what you like to do and how to get to do more of whatever that happens to be.  

The feeling that “your life is together” comes about when you are spending a large chunk of your life doing things that you are meant to be doing.  And you are meant to be doing things that engage you, interest you, and energize you.

I mean you can see how constantly doing the opposite is gonna drain you, right?

If the thought of knitting your own sweater gives you heart palpitations and simply driving by the mall gives you a migraine, it’s perfectly fine to order your new clothes online.  And maybe you want to spend the majority of your time coming up with a new closet design anyway, because that’s what gets you really excited!  

But it’s important to know these things about yourself, so that you can minimize the drainage and actively seek opportunities to do stuff that lights you up. 

3. Figure Out What Matters To You

The third part of the foundation for a “together” life is clarity in values.  When you are clear about what matters to you the most, you can feel confident in knowing that you are putting your efforts toward life areas that are most meaningful to you.

When you’re overhauling your wardrobe, you don’t wanna spend an entire Saturday out and about looking for a new party dress, when you’d actually really like to spend your money on a soft new sweater that will help you stay warm and cozy all fall.

Life building is no different.  When you’re building a life, you don’t want to spend your precious time and energy working toward someone else’s goals or someone else’s definition of success.  Clarifying your values will help you stay on the right track for you.  

4. Paint A Picture Of “Together”

When you know who you are, what you like to do, and what you value the most, you have the foundation to visualize what it means for you to have your life together.  What elements do you need?  What goals will you set?

5. Put Your Life Together One Piece At A Time

And the building of that “together” life takes place one baby step at a time.  Just like your closet organizing project will be too overwhelming if you expect to get through that semi-disaster in one afternoon so it is with transforming your life.  You can’t do it all at once.  

It’s one shelf at a time.  

One life area at a time.
